Pouto Lighthouse

Updated: Aug 14, 2019

Interesting History - The Oldest Wooden Lighthouse.

While staying at Kelly’s Bay we decided to take a day trip down to Pouto and visit the Pouto Lighthouse. Pouto Lighthouse is historically famous for being New Zealand’s oldest wooden lighthouse. The three story Lighthouse is located at Pouto Point.

It was constructured in 1884 to assist the passage of sailing ships carrying timber across from Kauri Forests.

Approx 150 shipwrecks have been buried in the sand dunes.

You can reach the Pouto Lighthouse via Safari 4WD tours or by walking 14km there and back from the Pouto community.

We decided to walk the 14km distance around the beach. It was a great walk but a bit difficult in places.

Definitely worth the trip.
