Just 3kms south of Coromandel is the 309 Road which winds across the Ranges from Coromandel to Whitianga you can explore a number of attractions along this road.
“The Waterworks”, “The Waiau Waterfall” and “The Kauri Grove”.
The Waterworks is 5km along the 309 Rd from SH25, is a wonderfully bizarre park filled with water-powered amusements made from old kitchen knives, washing machines, bikes and toilets.
Approximately 70% of all materials used in the construction of the attractions are recycled materials. Creating something new out of something old.
There's also a nice cafe, and self-contained motor where caravanners can stay overnight.
The Waiau Waterfall is 7 km along the 309 Road.
Beautiful native bush surrounds the falls and its popular swimming hole.
The Kauri Grove is another 1 km up the road from the Waiau Waterfall, a walking track takes you to the most accessible and mature kauri stand on the Peninsula. The grove contains a ‘siamese’ kauri which forks just above the ground
